Latest Fling from VMware Labs - View Pool Manager

View Pool Manager is a Fling that allows VMware View administrators to easily manage users across desktop pools and security groups.
One of the biggest challenges VMware View administrators face in large deployments is desktop pool maintenance. Commonly each desktop pool has Active Directory security groups with the number of users a given desktop pool will support. As employees leave/join the organization, security groups require maintenance to ensure the number of users in each group correctly match the amount of desktops available. VMware View Pool Manager allows VMware View administrators to easily manage users across desktop pools and security groups for large deployments.

This tool allow administrators to bind an Active Directory connection and specify:

* How many users there should exist per group (based on VMware View pool size)
* Floating or Persistent deployment
* Source Security Groups (all users to be distributed to pools)
* Destination Security Groups (All groups the users may be assigned to)

This tool help VMware View administrators to save hours of work adding, removing and maintaining users, desktop pools and security groups while ensuring each security group does not hold more users than the amount of desktops pool assigned to a given VMware View desktop pool.

VMware Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1 Released - Eric Sloof

Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1 provides the following features and components:

Remote Experience Agent installer - The Remote Experience Agent installs Feature Pack components on Horizon View desktops, enhancing the remote desktop experience provided by View Agent 5.2. In Feature Pack 1, the installation program installs Unity Touch and the HTML Access Agent on Horizon View desktops. Both components are installed by default when you run the installer.

HTML Access Agent - HTML Access allows users to connect to virtual desktops from their Web browsers without having to install Horizon View Client software on their client systems. The HTML Access Agent, which runs on Horizon View desktops, is the component that enables users to use HTML Access to connect to their desktops. You must install the Remote Experience Agent with the HTML Access Agent on the desktops that you want to be accessed via HTML Access.

Unity Touch - Unity Touch enhances the way that mobile client users access a desktop. Instead of trying to manipulate a full desktop image on a small device screen, users can browse between apps and documents in a native mobile user interface without seeing the desktop. The VMware Horizon View Client documents for mobile devices provide more information about end user features provided by Unity Touch.

HTML Access installer - This installer configures View Connection Server instances to allow users to select HTML Access to connect to desktops. After you run the HTML Access installer, the View Portal displays an HTML Access icon in addition to the View Client icon.

You must run this installer if you want to use HTML Access to connect to desktops in a Horizon View deployment. Running this installer is also required if your users go through Horizon Workspace and select HTML Access to connect to desktops.

VMware Horizon View 5.2 Feature Pack 1 Release Notes<https://www.vmware.com/support/view52/doc/horizon-view-52-feature-pack-1-release-notes.html>VMware Horizon View Clients for Windows, Mac, Ubuntu Linux, iOS, and Android allow you to connect to your VMware Horizon View virtual desktop from your device of choice giving you on-the-go access from any location.

2013 top VMware & virtualization blog voting results

2013 top VMware & virtualization blog voting results

So the voting has ended, the results have been tabulated and here they are. There were over 80 new blogs on the ballot this year and 4 new blogs to make the top 25. This year there was over 1300 votes compared to around 1200 last year. Voters were asked to pick their top 10 favorite blogs and them rank them from 1 to 10. The votes are weighted so a #1 vote is worth 10 points, a #2 vote is worth 9 points all the way down to a #10 vote being worth 1 point. The total points for each blog were added up to determine the results. It's a pretty time consuming process for me, some of it is automated but I still have to add up votes and drop them into a spreadsheet to determine the winners.

Be sure and watch the special vChat top blogger awards episode <http://www.vmwarevideos.com/vchat-episode-34-top-virtualization-blogs-2013-with-jtroyer> that we recorded with special guest John Troyer as we count up the top 25 winners with lots of color commentary. The vLaunchpad<http://vlp.vsphere-land.com/> and Planet vSphere-land<http://feed.vsphere-land.com/> will be updated soon to reflect the new voting results. Thank you everyone who voted and congratulations to the winners. With so many bloggers out there its a tough scene but I seriously encourage you all to keep at it, the longer you stick with it, the more people notice and will reward you with their vote. You guys are all winners, I know how hard it can be to find the time to blog but do know that your efforts are appreciated and your unselfish dedication makes a difference to a great many of people.

Special thanks to TrainSignal<http://www.trainsignal.com/> for sponsoring it again this year, be sure and check out their website for their new unlimited IT Training For Only $49 a Month.

Congrats everyone - @MikeYallits

Download VMware Network Virtualization Design Guide

I am happy to announce the availability of the VMware Network Virtualization Design Guide<http://www.vmware.com/resources/techresources/10354>. This guide provides an overview of the key attributes of network virtualization technology. Then the paper discusses different components of VMware's Network virtualization solution and explains VXLAN in detail. Finally, the design considerations section discusses couple of real life deployments and provides guidelines on how to prepare VXLAN fabric. On top of this VXLAN fabric, customers can now create and delete logical Layer 2 networks through few clicks, providing them the software defined network capability.

Please download this paper from here<http://www.vmware.com/resources/techresources/10354>.

I will be happy to address any of your questions or comments.

Horizon Workspace - Deployment Takeaways and Notes

I started deploying the Horizon Workspace .OVA into my home lab last night and came up with a few notes that I would like to bring to everyone’s attention.

First off, everyone review the VMware Horizon Workspace Reviews Guide before deploying (unfortunately, it was not released when I tried to deploy mine).  It can be found at:

Second, take special note of Table 2: Virtual Appliance Minimum Hardware Requirements of the guide (below):

Notice the massive amount of RAM that is required to run all 5 of the VA’s.  14GB isn’t allot of RAM in a production environment, but my poor little lab only has 16 GBs (which BTW is enough to run 4 Nested ESXi Hosts, 2 VC’s, View Connection and Security Servers, 5 Win 7 VDI desktops, a OpenFiler VSA, a Windows Domain Controller and a Veeam Backup Proxy) which didn't seem to be enough to run these 5 VA’s, a DC and a VC.

The other thing that you need to take away from this chart is that you will require 5 static IP addresses, which may or may not be an issue in your environment.

I’ll be rolling back my vRAM in both my DC and my VC tonight and trying the deployment / configuration again this evening, will let you know how it goes once its completed and functional.

New Technical White Paper - Horizon Workspace 1.0 Reviewer's Guide

The VMware Horizon Suite 1.0 is designed for today's mobile workforce. Users want to access business assets from anywhere, anytime, and from any device. IT needs to keep assets secure. With the Horizon Suite, IT has control, and users have choice.

The Horizon Suite includes VMware Horizon Workspace, VMware Horizon View, and VMware Horizon Mirage. Horizon Workspace provides secure, single sign-on to applications, data, and virtual desktops from any mobile device or computer.

Horizon View provides users with remote access to secure virtual desktops stored in the datacenter. End users can access their Horizon View desktops through Horizon Workspace. Horizon Mirage centrally manages desktop images of physical computers at the same time as it provides end users with local execution power and user personalization of the desktop. Users on Mirage-managed desktops can access their business assets through Horizon Workspace.

This document is a guided walkthrough of VMware Horizon Workspace, including a step-by-step perspective into technical architecture, use cases and initial installation, configuration, and integration. Here we will discuss the separate components of VMware Horizon Workspace, their interoperability with each other, and external integration with other products in the VMware Horizon Suite such as VMware Horizon View and VMware ThinApp.

VMware will show you how to set up a basic VMware Horizon Workspace environment, and the principles of scaling and integrating this deployment with your existing enterprise infrastructure.
