News on Global Hard Drive Shortage

News on Global Hard Drive Shortage

The availability of Hard Drives has decreased dramatically since the floods in Thailand caused many manufacturing plants to close. At this moment, Hard Drives are under worldwide constraint and there are no Hard Drives in Canadian distribution. Any device with a Hard Drive in it may be under constraint. Therefore, pricing will fluctuate without notice.

Western Digital, the world's No. 1 HDD supplier in terms of sales volume, and Toshiba have temporarily halted production of HDDs in Thailand, affecting a major portion of global hard-drive manufacturing. The companies operate HDD assembly facilities in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok. There are also Hard Drive Component Plants, some owned by Seagate, in the surrounding flood area that are directly affected.

The industry as a whole will take between 9 and 24 months to recover, which could mean increased hard drive prices throughout the whole of next year.

The severity of HDD shortages in the coming months largely depends on the industry's ability to recover lost production capacity in Thailand. While IDC believes HDD industry participants will recover and restore HDD production capacity relatively quickly, HDD supply will remain constrained for an extended period of time.

The devastating events in Thailand have caused not only these difficulties, but have also had a profound human effect.  There are over 550 reported deaths, as well as countless destroyed home and lives.  Our prayers and thoughts are with the people of Thailand as they strive to recover from this tragedy.
